Scotland County Highland Games

The 16th annual Scotland County Highland Games Weekend takes place Friday, October 3rd-Sunday, October 5th at the North Carolina Rural Heritage Center! This is a family-friendly event, and the largest tourism event held in Scotland County with participants and spectators from across the country. The Scotland County Highland Games are the only Scottish Games and Gathering located within the old Highland Scottish settlement of the Upper Cape Fear and Pee Dee regions of the Carolinas.
The celebration honors the area’s rich Scottish heritage, as Scotland County is home to one of the largest populations of Highland Scots in North America. The games feature a full schedule of events, including:
Scottish Heavy Athletics: Caber toss, Scottish hammer throw, sheaf toss, and more.
Highland Dancing: Competitions with various classes and age groups.
Piping and Drumming: EUSPBA-sanctioned pipe band and individual competitions.
Clan and Society Tents: A chance to learn about different Scottish clans and their history.
Entertainment Stage: Featuring traditional and contemporary Scottish music.
Sheep Herding Demonstrations: A fan favorite showcasing the skill of border collies.
Children’s Games: Scaled-down versions of the athletic events for younger attendees.
Scottish, British and Regional food vendors will be on site and Scottish and Celtic imports will be available. The weekend kicks off with a free “Highland Fling” on Friday, October 3rd, from 5:30pm-9pm at McDuffie Square in downtown Laurinburg.
